More than a decade ago, Michelangelo Guarise set out to solve a personal frustration: turning a tiny, inexpensive computer into a music player good enough to take high-quality sound seriously. He wrote the software himself, and, in the spirit of the open web, he gave it away. Volumio began life as an open-source project, and something unexpected happened. People all over the world adopted it, improved it, and built their own music players around it. A hobby became a community, and a community became a movement, held together by a shared idea that great sound should not be complicated or exclusive.

In 2020, Volumio became a company. The mission did not change, but the ambition grew. To make great sound truly accessible, it was not enough to write software. The whole experience had to work, end to end. So Volumio became a full vertical audio company, engineering the operating system, the hardware and the design together as one. From the software platform that powers the music, to award-winning streamers, DACs and players designed and made in Florence, Volumio took responsibility for the entire chain, from the code to the object in your living room.

That decision turned a community project into an avant-garde music technology company. Today Volumio software runs on more than 800,000 active devices worldwide and inside the products of over 30 hardware brands. It carries the streaming services people love and the certifications the industry demands, and it has earned international recognition, including multiple EISA Awards and an iF Design Award, alongside a place in the pages of the audio press. Through all of it, one way of working has stayed constant, and it is unmistakably Italian: technology built with craft, and the conviction that engineering and beauty belong together.

Volumio's next chapter is its most ambitious. Having built the software layer for connected audio, the company is opening it up into a platform, a common foundation any audio maker can build on, the way an operating system underpins an entire industry. And it is bringing intelligence to the experience itself. Through CORRD, its music discovery venture, Volumio is applying artificial intelligence to the oldest problem in music: helping people find the songs they will love, and rediscover the ones they had forgotten. It is doing this on its own terms, as a European company that believes technology, and the AI now shaping our cultural lives, should be built with independence, transparency and respect for the people who use it.
